Tibor Kalman

Tibor Kalman (1949-1999), founding editor-in-chief of Colors magazine, founder of M&Co design consultancy in New York in the 80s to 90s. I have been interested in this guy for some times. Just recently have read more about him. Some of his sentences found inspiring:

"A designer is a professional liar because he's hired not to make the properties of a product clear but to enhance the product beyond its truth..." Yes, we are teached to lie beautifully and professionally somehow.

"The sense in which we were our own audience was that we'd look at a project and say, never mind the client, do we think this is cool? Put simply, it's very hard to lie to yourself." Yes, honest to myself before going to cheat people!

'I consciously distanced myself from the graphics world once I started on the notion that ugliness was more interesting than beauty... that stuff which is human, interesting, fucked up, passionate rather than logical, reasonable and, of course, beautiful." Yes, nothing is perfect, perfect is fake! But everyone wants to be perfect, everyone wants to be told: you are perfect! And we are trying to make a perfect world even though we know we can't make it. But I prefer I am a bit odd and ugly, that's why others look a bit beautiful for me...

2 logotype proposals for the Herning Centre of Arts, named "HEART"

The architecture of the museum is inspired by shirt sleeves, so the idea for the logotype can be as a sewing experience as the hangtag for this shirt.

Another one is created by the light and shadow experience, one of the recognised characteristics of the museum building.

Snow-caped cars

Making drawing outdoor is impossible in the cold weather. So I made it indoor by looking outside through my room window. link

Christiania

Last weekend, Morten brought me to the area, "Christiania". This is a very different place where it has moderate government intervention. It is a grey area in Copenhagen. Back to history as in 60s, people gathered there was having their own life style, building their own houses and forming the hippie-liked community: music, art and hashish which is traded secretly. So in fact, some places within the area are not allowed for photos, but I took some as many as possible. For me, it is really a place of fantasy and a kind of fairy tale. link

Sustainable growth

This exhibition "FLOWmarket", held in the Danish Design Centre is about the idea of sustainable growth which is a controversial topic in many areas of social development. The exhibition is about social awareness, facts, ideas and dilemma... Did you know "the air inside the typical home is on average 2-5 times more polluted than the air just outside - largely because of household cleaners and pesticides?", Did you know "it would approx. cost $ 6 billions to provide basic education for all - world military expenditures in 2001 were estimated at $2.3 billion a day?"...Sorry, I really don't know! But thank you for telling me the ugly truth behind our nowadays life! link
